ABSTRACT

In this work was performed a qualitative study to identify what were the motivations and expectations of five students of Youth and Adult Education that work at university, as well as to understand how is it, from their point of view, to study in adulthood. Data were collected in two classes of Youth and Adult Education a through reflective individual interview, aided by a script containing 7 questions. The recordings were transcribed and subjected to analysis. The results show that among he students’ extrinsic motivation are: incentive co-workers and family, providing increased self-esteem. Motivations related to the world of work indicate salary bonus for completion and improvement in the performance of work activities, which are not related to the desire for a new job, or insertion in the labor market. The students' expectations of what the school can provide are: improvements in reading ability and writing besides understanding of informations, as well as to learn new issues. Despite or because of their stories the subjects still believe in school and they see an opportunity to improve not only knowledge from schooling, but also of themselves as human beings.
