Physicians perform many tasks which requires extreme amount of patience, and skills. They must demonstrate to have knowledge about biomedical, clinical, and cognate sciences established and still in development, as well as the application of that knowledge in patient care. Residents must submit an investigative and analytical attitude towards clinical situations, and apply knowledge of basic sciences and clinical support appropriate to their own disciplines (‘Dermatology’’). Medical knowledge is the foundation of our profession, is always evolving and demands of us doctors engagement in learning that spans the entire life. Physicians are committed in a privileged relationship with their patients, which is construct on trust, empathy and protection. The assistance provided by the doctors to the patient must be compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems. They must be competent to communicate effectively and demonstrate caring and respectful behavior towards patients and their families; get accurate and essential information about patients; make a diagnosis and informed therapeutic decisions based on information and patient preferences; updated scientific information and clinical judgment; and work effectively with other health care professionals, in order to obtain beneficial results with the patient.
Physicians as any other occupation has their responsibilities and tasks. Diagnosing a patient involves comprehending the symptoms exhibited and putting them together to understand what is wrong with the patient; treatment involves providing the precise guidance to a patient (‘‘Requirements’’ 2). Other than the doctor’s scientific specialty, communication may be the most important skill. ‘’Doctors in the U.S. may need to be able to understand those whose first language is not English, as well as children and the elderly. A 2006 patient study of skills a doctor needs, which was conducted by the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and Minnesota from 2001 to 2002, found that strong communication skills are among the most significant in succeeding in this career’’ (‘’What Skills’’ 1).
Physicians are some of the professional area that receive the highest salary. Some people say that unemployment for doctors is almost zero. According to the Medscape Dermatology Compensation Report for 2011, ‘’Most dermatologists in private practices earned the highest annual salary, reporting the average compensation of $300,000 or higher’’. However, the Average Salary for recent professionals is $234,000 (Sampilo 1). Dermatologist Salary and Compensations increase depending on factors such as: years in practice, during the firsts years a dermatologist salary is not as lucrative; skills, the average salary for dermatologist in a multi-specialty practice is $382,000 if compared to an annual payment of $157,000 when working in a hospital; number of hours worked, even in the dermatology area the gender role exists. A male dermatologist may receive a median pay of $300,000, while female dermatologist receives median pay of $262,500. This is predominantly because women prefer to work fewer hours to have more time for their families. The working hours are usually regular, since dermatologists see patients by appointment in their office. The benefits of becoming a dermatologist are that working in private practice gives the opportunity to have a higher salary, and with hired by healthcare organizations they may receive benefits, including health and life insurance, malpractice liability insurance, paid vacations, and retirement plans (Sampilo 2).
In future there must be a demand for dermatologists and geriatricians. During their career, the recently formed professional will work more than a doctor who is already a while exercising the profession. The medical union suggests that the value is at least three times the minimum wage by a common journey of twenty hours per week. Dermatology market is very favorable; it still not enough professionals to fill all positions in the public health system. Some good opportunities can be established in the research of skin diseases, especially skin cancer because cancer that has greatly increased its incidence in recent decades (‘’Dermatology’’). The employment for physicians and surgeons is projected to grow 18 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster other occupations. The job demand will increase because of the continued expansion of healthcare-related industries (Bureau 7).
In conclusion, what I realized is that I need to develop over the long period of my education the medical skills, attitudes and knowledge. However, a doctor is not made only of knowledge; they must apply the skills and attitudes throughout college as well. Medicine is a passion, is to surrender, and fall in love. Emerges with the desire of solidarity and commitment to fairness, justice and ethics. The challenge is to defend the faith in what moves us: the pursuit of diagnosis, treatment provision and the promise of comfort to those who are weakened by disease.
