Os projetos com computação em grade são divididos em categorias (Krauter 2001): Grade computacional, onde se precisa de processamento, diminuir o tempo de resposta de determinadas aplicações. Grade de serviços, sergir serviços onde não é possível desenvolver com apenas uma máquina, como pesquisas cientificas e etc. Grade de dados, repositório de dados ou data warehouses, onde possui controle de armazenamento e acesso aos dados.

Grade de dados são altamente utilizadas no conceito de big data, super maquinas analisando os dados fornecidos e armazenados nessa categoria de grade.
